Marriage record of "Hopy" Clemens identifies John Clemans as her father. Land records in Harrison Co.,, (W)VA show John Clemans and wife Abigail. John from Chester Twp, Burlington, NJ to Job Clemens of Bucks Co., PA. Note: info from Greg Estep and WFT (grestep@attbi.com) 9 Feb 2002. "1975 from Bance Morrissey, Miami Co., IN ' Julius Clemens was born in England. He came to New Jersey, then to Ohio. He was the father of Isaac, John (Mark Twain's father), Nicholas, Malinda, Polly and four other boys whose names are unknown............' (NOTE:) The biography of Samuel Langhorne Clemens shows his father married to Jane Lampton.. The case is not proven that John is the father of "Mark Twain" as stated above. Carie Lippincott< emlippencott@yahoo.com > 7 Jan 2004, citing Pat Ash and Richard Haines finds: "that the sons of Judah and esther burrough Clemens were Enoch and Job; however, the 1788 Estate of Judah Clemens, Esther Clemens, Administratrix, gives the names of John Clemens and Enoch Clemens as surety for the estate, and the signatures are those of Esther Clemens, Job Clemens and Enoch Clemans. Also, the estate inventory includes 'a bond against John Clemans principle and interest,' and A Book Amount against Benjamin Burrough.' Further, based on the Letters of Administartion for the Estate of Judah, Waterford, Gloucester tax rolls from the 1760-1790s, and subsequent deeds John Clemens/Clemans and his mother Esther Clemens purchased land in Harrison Co., WV in the late 1700s and that is who this Clemens line had formerly been traced to. John may have served in the Revolutionary War - A John Clemens from NJ is recorded -- this would have "qualified" him for being disowned by the Quakers.

Cause of death: Killed by Indians. Names of children comes from deed entry and other researchers. Deed Book 3, April 12 1798. "This indenture made on 12th day of April in the year of our Loard one thousand seven hundred and ninety eight in pursuance of a decree of the worshipful in the County Court of Harrison between John McCally and Sarah his wife, David Sleeth and Catherine his wife, David Carpenter and Catherine his wife,John Carpenter and Sarah his wife, Nicholas Carpenter and Mary his wife, John Brown and Margaret his wife, Abel Clemens and Barbara his wife, heirs of Nicholas Carpenter, deceased." Nicholas heirs sold this land to William Davies for $100. Nicholas is mentioned in the 1785 and 1787 census of Harrison County, VA as follows: 1785: There are 7 whites in 1 dwelling and 1 outbuilding; 1787: Head of the house is over 21 years old. He has 1 son 16-21, no slaves, 6 horses, and 9 cattle. He is listed on the voter list for Harison Co., on Jan 7, 1789, for election of the first president of the United States.Taken from H. P. Hildreth's "History of the Early Days", from an account given to the author by David Carpenter, grandson of Nicholas. Nicholas moved to Maryland and then to to Virginia, and last to Ohio. He had on his farm a gun and blacksmith's shop, store nad schoolhouse, all of which werehis own property. He owned 2,000 acres of land including an orchard with 400 apple trees. Nicholas was killed, with his son, by Indians while on a trading trip with mules laden with fruit, and with cattle for the settlers of Marietta, while camped for the night within a few miles of the Ohio River. Site is now known as 'Carpenter's Run'. See "Chronicles of Border Warfare" Another account attributes the deats to a scouting party of Shawnee Indians for a young warrier-chief named Tecumsah, The Shawnees still claimed the "western" region of Virginia at this time.
