Adam Eshleman

http://www.fulco.lib.in.us/Tombaugh/Cemeteries/Fulton%20County/Html/FC%20Cem%20-%20Henry.htm
It is only by reconstruction that I have Adam listed as John and Barbara's son. On the above record, we find, "John Eshelman, age 59, and Barbara, 53, were residents of Henry Twp, Fulton Co Ind, in Census, 1880. Their household included Adam, age 14 years." Later, we find the tombstone of Adam Eshelman and his apparent wife Ella May, listing his life as 1865-1915.

"ESHELMAN
(1) Ella May, 1872-1945
(2) Adam, 1865-1915"

Middle initial may have been J. In one place, Alvin's mother is listed as "Mrs. A.J. Eshelman."

Reference on his two marriages: http://www.fulco.lib.in.us/genealogy/Tombaugh/Marriages/pdf/e.pdf

A census record seems to identify him as 1866, but the tombstone says 1866.

Rosa Ramey

The only reference I find to her existence is a listing of Adam's two weddings:
http://www.fulco.lib.in.us/genealogy/Tombaugh/Marriages/pdf/e.pdf

Question: Was Alvin her son? He is described as Ella's step-son, so I believe this is the case.

Alvin Eshelman

Listed as Ella's step-son. This leads me to presume he was Rosa's son.

From the Rochester Sentinel, 1/25/1945:
"Funeral services for Mrs. Ella Mae ESHELMAN, 72, who died Tuesday night of a heart attack, will be saturday at 2 p.m. in the Akron Church of God. The Rev. Daniel SLAYBAUGH will officiate and burial will be in the Akron Odd Fellows cemetery. The body is at the Moyer funeral home and was returned to the residence today. Mrs. Eshelman [Ella Mae HENDERSON] was born in Wabash county, Nov. 5, 1872, the daughter of James and Clara HENDERSON, and spent most of her life in Akron. On Aug. 24, 1898, she was married to Adam ESHELMAN who preceded her in death. Surviving are four children, Charles [ESHELMAN] of Bremen; Everett [ESHELMAN] of Hammond; DeVerl [ESHELMAN] of Akron; Mrs. Ruby HYDE of Warsaw, and a step-son, Alvin ESHELMAN, of Newton Falls, Ohio. Also surviving are two grandchildren, Garland ESHELMAN of Akron and Garnett HYDE of Warsaw; one sister, Mrs. Emma DAUGHERTY of Richmond, and three brothers, Carl HENDERSON, of Fort Wayne, Earl [HENDERSON] of Fremont and Edward [HENDERSON] of South Bend."

The Sentinel for 9/5/1945 lists him (with respect to another funeral) as "the Reverend Alvin Eshelman."

Last name confirmed and school attendance shown with his brothers:

Garland Eldon Eshelman

The grandchild of Adam and Ella Mae Eshelman - though I don't know which of their three sons was his father. He had a brother or cousin named, Hyde.

From the Rochester Sentinel, 1/25/1945:

He was a pilot from a young age: http://yesteryear.clunette.com/skywriting103147.html - Warsaw Daily Times Fri. Oct. 31, 1947 - "Turning tables on the teacher, Robert Shawhan, instructor at the Akron high school is receiving flight instruction at the Rochester airport. Garland Eshelman, also of Akron is a new student at Rochester. One of the youngest pilots down there is Mickey Eaton, 17 years old, son of Rochester's 'Spud' Eaton."

Adrienne Berkshire wrote me on 7/29/2009:

James Willard Coplen

I've found two possibilities for this.

http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/Census/individual_record.asp?indi_code=1880US%5F6164106%5F3&lds=5®ion=0®ionfriendly=1880+US+Census&frompage=99
Born in Ohio in 1862, lived in New Castle, Fulton, Indiana in the 1880 census with his widowed mother Sarah Coplen.
Sarah: http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/Census/individual_record.asp?INDI_CODE=1880US_6164106_0&frompage=99

There is also a James W. Coplen living in Henry, Fulton, Indiana at the 1880 census with his father, William H. Coplen. Born in Indiana in 1863.
William: http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/Census/individual_record.asp?INDI_CODE=1880US_6164613_0&frompage=99

Rochester Sentinel obit dated Monday, 7 March 1932 - http://www.fulco.lib.in.us/genealogy/Tombaugh/Obituaries/Html/1932.htm
"Following a two weeks’ illness James Willard COPLEN, 68, died Sunday morning at three o’clock at the home of his nephew, Roy COPLEN, northwest of Akron. Death was due to paralysis.
Mr. Coplen was born on April 27, 1865 on a farm near Mentone and practically all of his life had been spent in that community. His wife, who was formerly Flora EATHELMAN, died three years ago. He was a member of the Saints Church.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at two o’clock at the Saints Church in Athens. Rev. Daniel SLAYBAUGH will be in charge and burial will be made in the Mt. Hope cemetery at Athens."

Comparing the above, and from the data presently available for Florence "Eshelman" (possibly other last name), this may not be an actual relative.

Florence O. Ashleman

Obit in Rochester Sentinel, Monday, October 7, 1929 - http://www.fulco.lib.in.us/genealogy/Tombaugh/Obituaries/Html/1929.htm
Funeral services in charge of Rev. Dan SLAYBAUGH for Mrs. Florence O. COPLEN were held at the Athens church Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. Burial was made in the Mt. Hope cemetery, near that town. Florence O. [ASHELMAN], daughter of Samuel and [Lydia] "Liddie" ASHELMAN, was born in Fulton county, May 5th, 1862 and passed away on Oct. 4th, 1929. She was united in marriage to Willard COPLEN on Oct. 20th, 1890. To this union five children were born all of whom have preceded the mother in death. Mrs. Coplen who was a member of the Church of God had been a resident of the Athens community all of her life.

Please note that it's possible this is not an Eshelman. Her maiden name is spelled various ways in the available obituaries, including, including "Ashelman" in her own, and "Eathelman" in her husband's. I can't trace her parents in our genealogy - the only Samuel Eshelman I presently have was her contemporary - could have been a brother - but could not have been her father.(Her name was listed as Ashleman in the 1870 and 1880 censuses - see, for example, http://www.fulco.lib.in.us/genealogy/Tombaugh/Census/pdf/1870.pdf - so it is likely this is a false lead and should not be in the Eshelman genalogy at all.)
