Hi friend... just a few words of gratitude for your detailed info on Windows 98(se) Memory Management. I am running two OS's, 98se & XP, using "Boot Magic" and have installed 1GB DDR Ram. Obviously XP was fine, but I don't have to explain the problems I had with 98se. Using your advice along with info off other web sites the following configuration seems to be very stable on my 98se OS:
PC: AMD Athlon(tm) 1000 MHz, American Megatrends BIOS 08/27/01, 1GB RAM (2 X 512mb DDR 333mhz PC2700), AGP 128mb Nvidia GeForce4 Ti4200
vcache: minfilecache=65536, MaxFileCache=524288; PagingDrive=C:, ConservativeSwapfileUsage=1, MaxPhysPage=40000 (Win386.swp is now 0kb)
Autoexec.bat entry: cwsdpmi -p -s- (cwsdpmi.exe is a tool added to C:\Windows\Command\ - ref: Windows 98 Annoyances Discussion Forum Message 1064337311 Rob Luce). Please do post this info on your site if you think it will help others!
With Thanx Gordon. Gordon <gorham@uku.co.uk>

Norway - Sunday, December 28, 2003 at 04:20:35 (EST)This site is absolutly commercialised crap: I've downloaded some programs and the majority is full of hidden SPYWARE and manages systems poorly (slows down your system heaps!). Donations? What a laugh, paying for having spyware supplied? Stay away from this and browsers which promise to advance your searches by 'pre-fetching' that is all absolutely manipulated/biases and reverts the oportunity of a true democratic internet/choice of information. Carsten Fitjer <cafitjer@ihug.co.nz> Response from Mr. E.I usually don’t respond to Guest Book items, but this one must be an exception. I’ve written Carsten to get more details. There is no spyware downloading from this site, and I’m unclear how I am characterized as “commercial” since there is no commerce on this site. I will, however, follow up on any further information he provides me, since it seems obvious that something soured his experience of my site. — JAEThe site is great. Melourne, Vic Australia - Thursday, August 21, 2003 at 23:53:30 (EDT)Hello !
I just finished fixing an XP computer that hung at shutdown after a new installation of Norton SystemWorks 2003. I tried all of the stuff on your site and I still had the same problem . To make a long story short , I stumbled on a google newsgroup (can't remember the Group)item that mentioned that Intel Application Accelerator might be the culprit . I immediately un-installed IAA and the system worked properly after that . I am sorry that I can't remember (or find again) the newsgroup . This info is in the for what it is worth category .
BTW , thanks for the effort you put into your XP Shutdown site . Apparently it is well known in the MCSE community , because I saw many references to the site in many different newsgroups .

Norway - Saturday, August 09, 2003 at 20:11:02 (EDT)I really, *really*, appreciate this site. I happened across it while looking for Microsoft's COMPLETE set of revised XP powertoys. (They have a page that refers to the Powertoys SET but has just ONE of the toys, TweakUI, available for download. If you know exactly where to look you'll find the complete package but their mighty fine search engine won't give it to ya.)
All the powertoys from micro-serf http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp.
What their search engine coughs up http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=afa135c8-8b63-4c03-8986-d7f45a6aa1fa&displaylang=en So anyway, I get the correct link for the toys and what's this? Lordy, a bunch of links to really cool freeware downloads! Get shutdown.exe, myIE2, ERUnt, and AIDA32 just for starters. I greedily downloaded a bunch of these and ignored the site while I played with the new software. Later that week, returned to the site. Hmmm, this is just the download page, where's the home page? Wow! What a great site. All kinds of tips, tutorials, and a really great "e-list" newsletter. (BTW: Ditto what you said about unemployment, I hope folks who read that and <understand> will take solace in your comments; I did.) If anyone reading this hasn't checked out the e-list, it's definitely worth reading. Both technical stuff and "humanistic" comments right on target.
I like the site design, especially the black text on "velum" background. Easy on the eyes and brain. I really liked your HTML tutorial and wished I found it before wading through a bunch of other books and stuff. I also happen to be a EditPad Pro user, so I was happy to see it being recommended. Great site!

Houston, TX USA - Saturday, August 09, 2003 at 06:20:34 (EDT)Windows98 SE in Novell 3.12 environment will NOT shut down. I tried the shortcut trick (C:\WINDOWS\RUNDLL32.EXE shell32.DLL,SHEx 9) and it worked ONCE on the second workstation and not at all on the first. Strangely enough, on the first workstation, the START/SHUT DOWN/SHUT DOWN now functioned properly after making but not using the shortcut. We've got about 600 Windows98 SE machines in the field and some of them shut down while others don't. Can't seem to find any consistancy. It's totally frustrating. Amarillo, TX USA - Thursday, July 10, 2003 at 12:38:41 (EDT)hello, People! back here again, looking for "solves" - I re-installed my original Windaft 98SE (supposedly the german OEM-version) and up-dated with about 14 Patches from the MS-Win98 website (http://www.microsoft.com/windows98/) but I now have a beautiful "half english half german" installation! It is a bit disturbing though, to keep swapping between languages, when going through the Menues - it has also shortened my Programmes>>Extras Menulist to a couple of printers **lol** - no more Entertainment entries (Soundrecorder etc), Dialup and so on!
Anyway - the 98SE-Shutdown problem doesn't occur - I reckon Bill Gates has slipped up on that one **laugh** - so I'll be on my way. Bye to all, from Germany

I can't trace it back to any program or device. Also on start up another box reads A DEVICE IS NOT FUNCTIONING, again I can't find the cause. DR WATSON does not see anything wrong, going thru system info and problem devices is useless. If computer has a fresh maintenance wizard done or has been off for several hours their is almost no delays in reaction to commands, however if two or more days without maint. wiz. go by I can run to the fridge for another beer while waiting for most responses, ANY IDEAS?

Scottsbluff, Nebraksa USA - Monday, May 05, 2003 at 12:54:39 (EDT)I wanted to tell you how much I LOVE this website, and if at some time, I can make a monetary contribution, believe me, I will. This is a GODSEND of a site....I send links to it, to my customer's all the time...I've shared it with my coworkers. I use it more often than I do Microsofts website, because your site is SO WELL put together..Btw, I found some good information on Stop Error 0X67 config_initialization failed. The official info from Microsoft says this:
Bug Check 0x67: CONFIG_INITIALIZATION_FAILED
The CONFIG_INITIALIZATION_FAILED bug check has a value of 0x00000067. This indicates that the registry configuration failed.
Parameters
The following parameters are displayed on the blue screen.
Parameter Description
1 Reserved
2 The location selector
3 The NT status code
4 Reserved
Cause
The registry couldn't allocate the pool needed to contain the registry files. This should never happen, since it is early enough in system initialization that there should be plenty of paged pool available.

USA - Wednesday, March 26, 2003 at 19:08:39 (EST)HOW TO LOGON INTO WINDOWS XP WITHOUT SELECTING USER ACCOUNTS OR PASSWORDS, and STILL BEING ABLE TO RUN SCHEDULED TASKS.
1.
Click Start | Run and type control userpasswords2
"Users" tab - Make sure "Users must enter a username and password to use this computer" is checked.
If you have several users listed, highlight the one you want to use - the main account or most used account.
Click "Properties" - Click "Group membership" - Select "Other" radio button and select "Administrators" in the drop-down list.
Click "apply | OK"
Still on the "Users" tab, make sure the account you selected is still highlighted and now you UNCHECK "Users must enter a username and password to use this computer"
Click "apply | OK"
A pop-up box will appear - 3 fields - "Username" will already be filled in according to the account you selected previously. Do NOT change this field. Enter and confirm your password in the next two fields.
Click "OK"
You will now be prompted to re-start your computer - do so by clicking "Yes"
At logon, your selected username will be filled in, type your password into the password box and click "OK"
2.
Start | Control panel | User accounts - click "Change the way users log on or off"
Make sure "Use the welcome screen" is checked and that "Use fast user switching" is UNCHECKED.
Click "Apply options" and close the next page "X"
3.
Start | Turn off computer | Restart
You now have a computer that will re-boot or startup without any user input or intervention - straight into your desktop. AND you will still be able to have Scheduled Tasks working if you want to. Just remember to enter your password correctly.
For example, I re-start my LAN server at work at 2am every day and then do the same at 2:30am for the 8 workstations. You will be amazed how slow XP gets if you just let everything say on all the time - a regular re-boot does wonders.
If you are interested in automating re-starts, look into either "shutdown -?" or "tsshutdn -?" from a command(dos) prompt.
All you need to do is save a .bat file in \windows\system32 with the required parameters and shedule the batch file to run via Scheduled Tasks.
This works for me - however you will loose your security and you will have to "switch users" if you need to after your computer has finished booting up - however you can regain a little security by enabling "password protection" via your screen saver - just set the delay to one minute or so.
I hope this helps.

It is so rare in this day of geekspeak to find someone who not only knows what he is talking about, but thoroughly demystifies the concepts and fixes. Thank you! Someone needs to tell MS that the truth will set computer users free -- to buy and better run more software! Instead of hiding all the settings and things the average person needs to know.
Only one question: with all your experience and other attributes, how come you aren't rich???? I know I know. The tech bust. I wish you luck; how can you fail?

Durham, NC USA - Monday, January 20, 2003 at 22:04:36 (EST)The knowledge base on this site gave me the answer I was looking for during a month or two. I had a new PC, and after installing NAV, I had Fatal Error Screens all the time. I tried almost everything (remove NAV 2002, install NAV 2003, remove ZoneAlarm etc. etc.). But the FBS's were still there. Finally, I searched the net -searched for Fatal Exeption 0E at 0028:C2xxxxxx- and got here. Reading the information in the knowledge base gave me the answer within 5 min. : I installed a new driver for my Alcatel Speedtouch pstn, and the problem was gone :-).
So, to everyone who helped creating this knowledge base, I say THANK YOU !!!!!!

sacramento, Ca USA - Wednesday, January 15, 2003 at 00:21:02 (EST)Hi Jim. Just want to thank you for the permanent solution for BSOD's. I'm forever in your debt. Great, helpful website, especially for a greenhorn hobbiest in the 4th year dangerous stage (I got into computers at age 60). Be back soon, I'm sure. Got some more RSOD's to fix...

St. George, UT USA - Friday, January 10, 2003 at 23:23:01 (EST)I've found some excellent utilities on your website, including MYie, which is a terrific browser. But you should check out the newer MYie2, which is a refined version, and replace the older version on your list.

I saw your site given as a solution to a problem on Zdnet and was curious, I am so glad I dropped by as I have gained some more experience and some good freeware. Thank you very much for taking the time and trouble to think of others.
God Bless
