I DO NOT USE ANY SOFTWARE ON THIS PAGE (except those in the My Favorite Freeware box). These pages are for freeware suggestions site visitors have made for which I, personally, have no need and no interest. I can’t (and don’t) vouch for anything here.

If you don’t find what you need here, I recommend Pricelessware, a very sound, clean freeware site based on recommendations of alt.comp.freeware participants.

My Favorite Freeware EditPad A Notepad replacement - Light-weight, with many more features including a multi-document tab system. It’s the program I use to create and maintain this entire web site.
Notepad+ A Notepad replacement - Simple, light-weight, and without Notepad’s most bothersome limitations.
Edxor
Added 11/28/03
For Win 9x; with a patch, Win 2000/XP. “I am very impressed with Edxor, a Notepad replacement that is extremely small in size but extremely powerful (probably the most compact in the Windows world; self-contained and VB/MFC-free). It is capable of most all the features of other Notepad replacements, but smaller, quicker, no buttons in your face, just simple “letter” controls. Don’t give up on it until you read the manual. All the controls do work, and some do not even display until you have text selected. BTW it will launch browsers to preview files, or it will launch several of your favorite programs too. It is also a file spliter, task manager, encrypter, cliptext, recent and bookmark files, clean registry, I can’t list them all, but all this is in a file only 27KB!” By Dariusz Stanislawek. (Recommended by John Morse)
NoteTab
Added 11/28/03
For 9x/NT/2K/XP. “Free Notepad replacement and a handy HTML editor. Handle a heap of files with a simple tabbed interface. Search or find/replace text quickly in one/all files you have loaded. All files you had loaded when you exited are still there next time. You can automate web page creation using built-in scripting tool.” By Fookes Software. (Recommended by Pat Drummond)
Mr. E.’s Note: The Pro version — which is not freeware — offers a thesaurus and multilingual spell-checker. The only unencumbered freeware version is NoteTab Light.
Programmer Notepad
Added 1/2/05
“Great text editor that support several language codes.” By Simon Steele. (Recommended by “estorde”)
Proton
Added 7/18/04
(Windows versions not specified.) “Simple text-editor. Supports syntax-highlighting for more than 20 programming languages.” By Uli Meybohm. (Recommended by Kai Richter)
“This is a neat editor. I’d like to see it localized in English (some of the dialogs are partly in German). I’d recommend this editor to anyone learning HTML or JScript and unable to afford EditPad Pro. Built-in syntax coloring makes programming much easier.” (Daniel Bond)
Mr. E.’s Note: To avoid confusion I should add that whle EditPad Pro is a payware program, the EditPad I recommend above (and which I use exclusively as my Notepad replacement, including for coding every page of this site) is freeware.
